‘But why push a lovely dog down through a coal-hole?’ said Colin, puzzled. ‘What an extraordinary thing to do! And it seems queer to me to have a coal-hole in this little yard. No coal-cart can come up that alley-way.’

‘But a coal-man with a sack of coal can, stupid!’ said Peter. ‘Can we get this lid up? I’d like to peep down, and see if there’s anything to be seen!’

It was an awkward thing to get up, besides being extremely heavy. Peter got very cross with it.

But at last it was lifted, and shoved to one side. Then the boys all bent over eagerly, to look down.

Their heads cracked together.

‘I get first look,’ said Peter, firmly. ‘I’m the chief.’ So the others let him look first.

He sat back, disappointed. ‘Well, it’s as dark and black as a, well, as a coal-hole!’ he said.

‘Can’t see a single thing. Anyone got a torch?’

‘I’ve still got mine on me,’ said Colin, and got it out of his pocket. They shone it down the dark hole. But even the light of the torch showed them nothing. Certainly there was no sign of a dog!

There was no sign of coal or coke either. It looked just a dark, horrible, deep hole.

‘Er — anyone like to jump down?’ said Peter.
